The reduction in solar ultraviolet radiation may also have lead to a decline in ozone production in the lower stratosphere and the latter process may have been the trigger mechanism responsible for the inferred climate changes, because a decrease in the stratospheric ozone content produced cooling of the lower stratosphere by the absorption of less sunlight.
This could have resulted in a decrease of the latitudinal extension of the Hadley Cell circulation and a possible associated weakening of monsoons, which would be consistent with inferred drier conditions in the tropics.

A Comment on the Yayoi Period Dating Controversy
Advanced Search Summary A total of five sediment cores from three sites, the Arctic Ocean, the Fram Strait and the Greenland Sea, yielded evidence for geomagnetic reversal excursions and associated strong lows in relative palaeointensity during oxygen isotope stages 2 and 3. A general similarity of the obtained relative palaeointensity curves to reference data can be observed.
However, in the very detail, results from this high-resolution study differ from published records in a way that the prominent Laschamp excursion is clearly characterized by a significant field recovery when reaching the steepest negative inclinations, whereas only the N—R and R—N transitions are associated with the lowest values. Two subsequent excursions also reach nearly reversed inclinations but without any field recovery at that state. A total of 41 accelerator mass spectrometry AMS 14C ages appeared to allow a better age determination of these three directional excursions and related relative palaeointensity variations.
However, although the three sites yielded more or less consistent chronological as well as palaeomagnetic results a comparison to another site, PS in the Iceland Sea, revealed significant divergences in the ages of the geomagnetic field excursions of up to 4 ka even on basis of uncalibrated AMS 14C ages.

Center for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage The Center for Isotopic Research on Cultural and Environmental heritage was established in with the aim of performing basic and applied research, as well as service activity, using isotopic methodologies applied to the diagnostics of cultural heritage artifacts and to the study of environmental processes.
As such methodologies were originally developed in the domain of physics research, the fields of activity of CIRCE were extended, on one side, towards basic nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics and, on the other side, towards industrial applications. Mass spectrometry of isotopes of the most abundant elements in nature is a powerful investigation tool, widely used in sciences applied to the cultural and environmental heritage diagnostics. The environment is, by its nature, in continuous evolution, but mankind has accelerated the path towards an unknown direction.
The measurement of the isotopic composition of elements such as Carbon, Oxygen and Nitrogen in the atmosphere, in soils, in vegetation and in waters has been demonstrated to be a very sensitive indicator of the tiny variations of the fluxes of such elements and to study mechanisms still barely understood. The presence in the environment of long lived cosmogenic isotopes allows to significantly extend the investigation possibilities, provided the isotopic ratio measurement sensitivity is pushed to extremely high levels, not accessible to conventional mass spectrometry.
