Filed under Pagadian City The Philippines, being a country archipelago of islands and seas, have naturally wonderful beaches, some of which are famous the world over. Beaches like Puerto Galera, Boracay, and the various beaches in Cebu rake in tourists from around the world all year round because of their pristine and cool blue waters and fine, white-sand shores. However, if one will just look around more, they will find that there are other less-known but equally beautiful beach spots in other parts of the Philippines. In Pagadian, in particular, there are beaches and islands that will make one believe that there is such a thing as a secluded paradise on Earth. A nice place to start would be the Dao-Dao Islands some seven to ten minutes away from the seaport, when riding a motorboat. It is a rather big island, with an area size of about 1.

Kidney disease Some experts believe that a number of factors besides HIV can significantly contribute to these problems. People with HIV take ARVs, some of which can contribute to bone loss, kidney damage, fat redistribution and elevated cholesterol and triglycerides. People with HIV are far more likely than the general population to be coinfected with either hep B or hep C—or sometimes all three—and these increase the risk of liver cancer, liver failure, kidney disease and diabetes.
People with HIV are many times more likely to be chronically infected with human papillomavirus HPV , which causes cervical and anal cancer as well as cancers of the head, neck and throat. People with HIV are up to three times as likely to smoke tobacco, which is one of the leading causes of heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer and emphysema. HIV can directly infect key tissues in the bone, brain, circulatory system and elsewhere, and it can cause inflammation-related damage to the heart, nervous system, liver and kidneys.
These factors likely play major roles in the increased rates of aging-related diseases and conditions seen in people with HIV. Researchers are working to try to understand how quickly inflammation and immunosenescence occur in people with HIV after they become infected. There is evidence that it begins to happen very soon after a person contracts HIV, but that good control of the virus either because a person naturally controls HIV well or because he or she takes ARV therapy may slow this process down somewhat.

It is said that the mainland portion of what is now Tanzania was named by a British civil servant in , from the Swahili words tanga sail and nyika bright arid plain. In , Tanganyika was joined with Zanzibar, an offshore archipelago of islands, to form the present United Republic of Tanzania. Because of a unique combination of historic and cultural factors, Tanzanians share strong feelings of national pride and cohesion.
This sense of nationalism has served to keep the country at peace for over two decades, while most of its neighbors have been involved intermittently in catastrophically destructive civil and cross-border wars. Tanzanians have been able to resolve most internal problems without resorting to violence because of a shared language, the lack of political or economic dominance by any ethnic group, and the strong leadership provided by Julius Nyerere — , the first president of Tanzania.
At the same time, however, repressive, corrupting influences emanating from the colonial, socialist, and capitalist eras have fostered among many Tanzanians an attitude of dependency and fatalistic resignation that helps keep the country one of the poorest in the world. Covering approximately , square miles , square kilometers —an area about one and one-half times the size of Texas, Tanzania lies on the east coast of Africa, just south of the equator.
Tanzania also shares three great lakes—Victoria, Tanganyika, and Malawi—with its neighbors. The country is comprised of a wide variety of agro-ecological zones: The ethnic groups that inhabit Tanzania have adapted to a wide range of geophysical and climatic conditions. The specific habits, customs, and life-views of each group have been influenced by tribal traditions and alliances, European invasions, population movements over the centuries, and introduced and endemic diseases.
In the late s, the central political administration was moved from Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast to the more centrally located city of Dodoma, which lies in the middle of the central plateau. Because of Dodoma’s dry climate, relative lack of economic development, and small size, however, the port of Dar es Salaam remains the urban center of national importance. The current population in Tanzania is approximately 30 million, comprised of indigenous peoples and Pakistani, Indian, Arab, and European subpopulations.

Links Introduction Many adolescents engage in sexual intercourse with multiple partners and without condoms. Among sexually experienced people, adolescents aged 15 to 19 years have some of the highest reported rates of STDs. In addition, particular groups of adolescents eg, males who have sex with males, injection drug users, and teens who have sex for drugs engage in even greater risk-taking behavior.
Some of these programs have been effective at changing behavior, while others have not. This chapter presents data on adolescent sexual risk-taking behavior, reviews the studies measuring the impact of adolescent prevention programs, and identifies common characteristics of programs that have been effective in reducing sexual risk-taking behavior.

This rate dwarfed the prevalence rate in South Africa, which has the largest population of HIV positive individuals in the world, with a mere 4. Prevalence rate refers to the percentage of individual affected by the disease at specific time. With that in mind, we can say that right now, in a population of Million Filipinos, there are 5. This rapidly growing epidemic if left uncontrolled will eventually make The Philippines at par with South Africa with 1 out 10 individuals affected with HIV.
So what went wrong? As a nurse with 15 years experience handling HIV cases and working actively with HIV positive individuals, here are my personal conclusions, do take note that this conclusions are not even close with the official conclusion of the Department of Health on why HIV became a rapidly growing epidemic in The Philippines. I personally think that their conclusion is too traditional and not in touch with the modern activities of our youth.
DOH says that the resistance of the Church to some forms of birth control is a contributing factor on the HIV epidemic right now. I say that HIV is most commonly seen in the young population. A population that makes their own decision and is rebellious to the church teachings. Though the Church could have cause some sort of contribution, I do believe that the lack of sex education in our school particularly to our youth is a more blameable culprit than the Church. DOH says prostitution or sex for money is a contributing factor of the epidemic and should be eradicated.
I say that, prostitution cannot be eradicated.

Structural violence Structural violence is an important factor in the treatment of people living with AIDS. Paul Farmer argues that social determinants affecting the lives of certain cultural groups alter their risk of infections and their ability to access treatment. Farmer also argues that social intervention may be key in altering the gap in treatment between these groups of people.

The project is funded by the NIMH. The intervention is informed by a theoretical model that is derived from existing research addressing the associations between IPV and ideologies of male superiority, a culture of violence, and high levels of alcohol and drug use. The process of intervention development has included integrating existing relevant evidence-based programmes, team workshops, and consultations with experts in the field and with key informant adolescents.
The initial testing of the intervention with evaluation in four schools will be completed in National female homicide study This is a retrospective study of the homicides of women aged 14 and over in South Africa in , which involved data collection from mortuary death registers which were followed up via their police case numbers. This study ascertained the level of knowledge about HIV infection and prevention, particularly prevention of mother to child transmission PMTCT amongst South African women from a low income community. It also established the challenges in delivering HIV education from the perspectives of health care volunteers. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 health care volunteers who were either health care workers or residents who provided some form of social support in the community.
Results The majority of respondents indicated that a mother could transmit HIV to her child but were unable to specify how. They were supportive of routine testing procedures and child bearing amongst HIV positive women. Health care volunteers indicated a need for a community clinic in the area.
